The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. Further the institute was renamed as National Institute of Technology and given the status of Deemed University. The Institute is a University which awards B.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc., M.B.A.,M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The Institute imparts education in the disciplines of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering,Information Technology, Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environmental science, Materials Science and Management Studies.
There are well furnished classroom available for the conduct of lectures. All the classrooms are well equipped with adequate fans, tube lights, desks and chairs to enable a friendly environment for academic exchange through lectures.
College has a laboratories, which is well equipped. The equipment of laboratory helps in enhancing the learning process and in enabling the proper conduct of the university prescribed courses. All the computers are branded. The Laboratory is well equipped with latest technology and sophisticated equipment.
The Central Library as one of the important central facilities of the institute supports the study, teaching, research and development programmes of the institute. The library has a collection of 1.2 lac volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books & Bound vols. of Journals, Standards etc. The book database is accessible through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue).
NIT, Durgapur is a residential institute. There are seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate the admitted students. The most of the teachers and the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the institute. In the middle of the residential area there is a shopping complex which meets the daily requirement of the residents. Accommodation is provided to all foreign students in hostels.
There are many facilities for the students to engage themselves in extra-curricular activities. Sports and cultural activities have become part and parcel of the campus life. It has been elevated to the status of a National Institute of Technology and has since crossed the milestone of its first fifty years of existence as an Institute of National Importance. It has tried to instil in the students the enthusiasm of the past as well as the impulse to reach beyond. With this insignia of excellence, the institute has expanded its horizons and now the students propel themselves to achieve g reat academic feats with a focus on innovation. National Institute of Technology, Durgapur the only one of its kind in West Bengal has surpassed many milestones and created an ambience of academic excellence. Normally the placements in NITD commence in the beginning of the final year (Seventh Semester) i.e. in the month of July. Prior to this, an invitation is sent to all previous recruiters in the month of May. Along with the invitation a form is provided seeking the company profile & information ( CPI Form). After getting the willingness from the companies, the CPI Form is displayed in the notice Board. On the allotted day the company visits the campus, makes pre-placement talk, conducts tests and interviews of the willing candidates and selects the best .
