B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering is an undergraduate programme that is designed to deal with the study of petroleum sciences. The programme helps students garner knowledge about our planet earth.
The engineering programme is a combination of geology and geophysics. The course deals with the statistical methods in Geo Sciences and educates candidates in ground water exploration. B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering equips a student with intensive knowledge about Geo Science and certain earth activities leading to discovery and exploration of oil and gas, geo data interpretation and its analysis.
The curriculum of the programme, in most of the institutions, is domain focused. On successful completion of the programme, students become well-versed with different facets of Geo Science and are ready to enter the Geo Science industry as able engineers with the required knowledge.
The Bachelor’s course in Geo Sciences is a four-year career oriented programme, which is spread over eight semesters for the ease and convenience of the pupil. Students interested in the study of petroleum engineering, production, drilling etc. should opt for the course in Geo Sciences engineering.
B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering is majorly available as a full-time course. In order to complete the course, students must clear each of the eight semesters with the minimum passing marks, as set by the institution. During the course, students are put through projects, experiments and activities related to the programme (these inculcate practical learning in students).
To be eligible for the course, a student should have successfully completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as the main subject with a minimum of 55 percent marks in aggregate.
There are lots of colleges that offer lateral entry in the course. For lateral admission, a student is required to clear an entrance exam conducted by respective institutions.
Pursuing a B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering is considered beneficial for students as it opens gates for jobs in various fields. A fresh Geo Sciences engineer can get jobs like senior engineer, researcher, professor, teacher or a supervisory engineer. The salary package for each job role varies between 15,000 to one lakh rupees per month.

The admission to the programme commences with the applications for the course and the entrance exam. After the completion of Class 12, prospective students with Physic, Chemistry and Mathematics as the main subjects and a total aggregate of at least 50 percent marks can apply for the entrance test conducted by the college/institute.
Students can apply either through the website of the respective college or by hand from the Institute.
Since most colleges/institutions conduct their own entrance test for B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering, students need to keep a tab on the notifications of the college where they wish to enrol in for the course. Colleges generally follow the entrance exam with centralised counselling. Students that make it through the entrance test and the counselling are finally admitted in the B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering course.
As mentioned, most colleges and institutions conduct their own entrance exam, usually in the month of May. The entrance exam features questions from Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, English comprehension, general awareness and current affairs. The test is MCQ-based, though there is a penalty for each wrong answer.
If the college or institution does not conduct an entrance exam of its own, then admissions are done on the basis of JEE Mains score. Students seeking admission in bachelors of Geo Sciences should have appeared and cleared the JEE Main exam for the admission.
The admission in B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering is dependent on the number of marks a student has scored in the entrance exam. Though, clearing the entrance test does not assure admission. The weightage is also given to a student’s marks in class 12 and how the student has fared in the interview.
As the world population grows, the burden on natural resources on finite earth increase. It then becomes necessary for students to take up a course in Geo Sciences and help in proper evaluation and stabilisation of buildings, roads and other structures, in characterising contaminated sites and ground water sources before clean up, and locating new energy resources and minerals to meet these challenges. Along with this, B.Tech in Geo Sciences Engineering study about the planet earth and different natural geologic systems. They learn and investigate the minerals, soil, energy resources and water to understand how nature works today, how it worked anciently and how it will behave in the near future.
