Sustainable architecture is a general term that describes environmentally conscious design techniques in the field of architecture. In the broad context, sustainable architecture seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by enhancing efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space. Most simply, the idea of sustainability, or ecological design, is to ensure that our actions and decisions today do not inhibit the opportunities of future generations.

It is a specialized branch of architecture and one that is not offered at many universities in India. Some of them offering the course are: School of Planning & Architecture, Delhi; Bhartiya Vidyapeeth University, Pune; IGNOU, TISS, Mumbai; Pondicherry University. TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) also offers short term and long term programmes in sustainable development. Most universities offer a masters degree/diploma in architecture after which you can start working in the area of sustainable architecture. You will have to get your degree assessed by the council of architecrue. If they accept your degree as suitable for the course you can apply for the M.Arch programme with 50% in graduation and an entrance test. There is more scope for this abroad than in India and you can decide on universities once you know which country you wish to study in.
