Occupational therapy is certainly an excellent career in a medical-related field, even though the salary may not be so good right now. However, it will improve, particularly in government medical institutes and hospitals. You can enhance your career growth and earning capacity with a Master’s qualification whether in OT or in health administration. If more inclined towards specialising in OT, the MOT is the best degree to pursue. After some years of experience, you can set up your clinic. But if you wish to brighten your prospects, then the health or hospital management programme is advisable. Companies like Apollo, Max, Fortis, Wockhardt, Tata and several others are setting up state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics. These will require more trained professionals for administration. The Tata Institute of Social Services, Mumbai, and the Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration, Hyderabad, offer a Master’s programme in hospital administration for graduates with at least 50 per cent marks. SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai; Symbiosis Centre of Health Care, Pune; and the Indian Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur, are some of the institutes offering PG diploma courses in healthcare/hospital administration to graduates in any discipline. Some universities offer hospital and health management programmes, e.g. Panjab University, Chandigarh; Shivaji University, Vidyanagar, Kolhapur; Madurai Kamaraj University; and Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore. There are also distance-mode courses in health and family welfare management offered by the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, and the Indira Gandhi National Open University which offers a PG diploma in health administration for graduates with experience. Doing an MBA in health care should be a good move. Usha Albuquerque
