There is a strict rule of good eye sight in Merchant Navy. You could get it rectified with surgery.

Eligibility Criteria to join Merchant Navy:

• You should have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (to get into Nautical Science and Marine engineering).

• Pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness. Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.

• You must complete your graduation from recognized university.

• Admission is through entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.

• The height should be 152cm for female candidates and 157 cm for male candidates.

• Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female). After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test.

• There are some private institutes, which offer training for merchant navy as well. These institutes prepare students for jobs such as deck cadets and marine engineering jobs.

Direct entry to Merchant Navy is also possible students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets and a student holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology Engineering could also join the Merchant navy as a Engine Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer. Direct entry Deck Cadets are required to undergo basic pre-sea training arranged by the recruiting company itself and the direct entry engineering cadets are preferred to do a Pre-sea course of 9 months duration in Marine Engineering conducted by the MERI.
