As long as you are able to justify this adequately to the interview panel, it is ok. Do mention your work with the NGO to the panel-the best time is during your Introduction itself. But you can mention it in writing only if you have a Certificate from your organization, which meets the requirements of the institute (i.e-they may have certain conditions such as only paid, full-time work experience shall be considered).
