Medicine is possibly the most difficult and expensive programmes abroad, as most countries reserve seats in medical colleges for their own nationals. Moreover, in the US, you will need to take up a four-year pre-med course before getting into medical college. Medical colleges in the UK also require some pre-med study such as the Access to Medicine certificate. Fees for medical colleges can range from around $40,000 to $100,000 a year. And there are no scholarships for medical studies, except possibly for very brilliant candidates. Therefore, if you wish to become a doctor, I suggest you try for medical colleges in India. After MBBS, you may try for postgraduate studies abroad, whether in the US or UK, where admission is marginally easier. However, if you are very keen to study abroad, you can apply to the US or UK for graduation in medicine-related subjects like biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology and other such sciences, for which many US universities are even willing to provide financial aid to students with high marks. For more information, contact the United States India Educational Foundation (www.usief.org.in), located at Hailey Road, New Delhi, and with centres in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and some other cities. USIEF is the authorised agency for all information regarding admission to US universities. For the UK, get in touch with the Education Counseling Service of the British Council Division (www.britishcouncil.org/india), 17, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi. Usha Albuquerque
