Hi,

Please do not be scared and confused. This is a very important and crucial stage of your life and you really need to sit down and calmly decide what is it that interests you and what is it that you will enjoying doing.

In today’s world, computers are so essential to almost any professional activity, that irrespective of the career you plan to choose, it is important to have a working knowledge of computers. As you have not mentioned what your field of interest is, it is difficult to suggest a particular course. However, there are two levels of computer courses. The shorter, basic courses equip you with skills for using a computer in day-to-day functioning, as a tool in whatever job you may be. You will learn word processing, databases and spreadsheets which will help you if you go into careers like business management, financial services, media, government services and so on.

For a specialised career in computers you would need to go in for the longer, detailed courses which train you in programming, software development or systems administration. Again most of these courses can only provide you the basics for a junior level job, or in a computer user firm, as most software development organisations require qualifications such as B.E, B. Tech or MCA. The BE, B Tech or B.Sc in Information technology provides a good theoretical base for a career in computers. You require 10 + 2 with science for these courses. The BCA can be followed up with an MCA and students from any stream with a strong mathematical base can apply for the BCA course. The University of Delhi and Kurukshetra University in the northern region offer MCA and B.Sc courses in Computer Science. There are also many other private institutes which provide training at different levels, and the recognition and value of the course depends on the accreditation from DOEACC (Department of Electronics Accreditation of Computer Courses scheme). The Indira Gandhi National Open University offers BCA through distance learning, for students of any stream, with maths.

Good luck!!!
