Mechanical engineering is the generic branch with automobile engineering having started out first only as a specialisation subject of mechanical engineering and thereon as the automobile industry grows and specialisation in particular areas of the automobile industry gains strength, the syllabus accordingly is being changed and differentiated. Again if your focus is a larger horizon then mechanical engineering should be the choice and if it is focussed solely on the automobile industry then one can choose automobile engineering.
