About Animation / Multimedia Multimedia talks about multi dimensions of media, which could be an amalgamation of text, sound effects, light, animated figures, still images, videos and interactive content forms. Multimedia is simply multiple forms of media integrated together. In multimedia, you communicate a concept or information via a website, CD-ROM, kiosk, usually in an interactive form. Good multimedia designers gain proficiency in programmes such as Adobe Premiere, Macromedia Director, Adobe Photoshop, and sometimes Microsoft PowerPoint for business presentations.

 Whereas animation, a part of multimedia, can be defined as a kind of optical illusion. Animation is an act of animating, or giving life or soul to still characters. It is a technique of making drawings move just like cartoon films. Animation is used basically for entertainment purposes. One must understand that the animation industry is not just about creativity, but also technical skills. Animation, one of the specialised aspects of the multimedia industry, technically refers to the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2D or 3D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. One needs to have hands-on knowledge of science, mainly physics and also geometry/mechanical drawing, to become an expert. Creating an animation consists of the following stages: idea development, pre-production, production and post-production. The characters are created in idea development stage. In pre-production, the ideas are converted into layouts. Scriptwriting, storyboarding, character development, backgrounds, layout designing, animatics and voice comes under pre-production. Amazingly, now animation not only includes the entertainment sector but also non-entertainment and increasingly telecommunications, as well. Skills and Education Credentials Job requirements in multimedia calls for qualifications in video production, multimedia production, animation, or visual arts and related discipline. Areas of specialisation in animation and multimedia include a focus on production, programming and project designs. The specialties could range from visual design, 2D and 3D animation, audio-video synchronisation, technical writing, author-based programming, art direction and production, to motion graphics, interactive design, publishing, special effects, game design, 3D modelling and interface design. For a better job prospect in Animation and Multimedia, one should have a degree or diploma in the related subject. Minimum education qualification for a degree and diploma course in Animation and Multimedia is 10+2 or equivalent. Future Prospects Professionals in Animation and Multimedia are highly in demand; NASSCOM, the apex body of IT software and services in India estimates that at least three lakh jobs are currently available in Animation and Multimedia sector. But only those who are multi-skilled can be at an edge. The industry is throwing up a plethora of opportunities. Satellite television, internet, gaming and cross-platform exploitation are the reasons for this growth. Animation professionals can find great opportunities in the areas of computer animation, film animation, and a wide range of media businesses. Numerous job opportunities are available in India as well as abroad in the exciting field of animation. It opens the door to film industries such as Hollywood, which is the world of special effects and imagery for films. Animation and multimedia professionals have a variety of lucrative career paths to choose from. Individual career paths depend on their own abilities and aptitudes. They can be texture artists, 3d modellers, riggers or animators. They have opportunities to work in new and emerging platforms such as media convergence, mobile media and online games. Animation is also increasingly being used in edutainment and in interactive CDs, among others. As a successful graduate of a good multimedia programme, once can apply for positions such as scriptwriter for multimedia, web designer, multimedia producer, computer-based training designer, web script language developer, and more. There are many entry-level career opportunities with corporations, organisations, educational institutions, government agencies, entertainment, and advertising industries. The remuneration can start with Rs 10,000 per month for a fresher and with experience and proficiency sky can be the limit. Even Rs 10 to 20 lakh per month can be earned. At the top of the hill are jobs such as, Creative Director, Animation Director, VFX Director, Lighting, Modeling and Rigging artists, Production Head, etc. Besides, Mulltimedia designers and animators can also take up freelance projects and work from home.
