Hey Dongure,
About :
Civil service is the name given to numerous departments and agencies that provide services directly to the public and to the government. The Indian civil service or the Indian administrative service (IAS) is the backbone of the Indian government machinery and is made up of all the departments which run the state administration. The IAS officers are recruited by the Union government on the recommendation of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and posted under various State governments. It is a highly competitive and challenging yet powerful and prestigious field to be in. This is because although the respective State Governments have control over them, they can’t censure or take disciplinary action against IAS and other All India Services officers without consulting the Union Government and the UPSC Anyone thinking of taking up civil service should know that it is a very difficult profession to get into. So once you decide to appear for the civil service exam, be prepared to slog endlessly and burn the proverbial midnight oil.
How to get there
Aspirants should be graduates from a recognised university and should be between 21-30 years of age. For SC/ST candidates there is an age relaxation of 5 years. Repeated attempts are allowed up to four times for General Merit candidates, seven times for OBC candidates. There is no bar on the number of attempts for SC/ST candidates. Those with professional or technical qualifications recognised by the government are also eligible. Those who have given the final year examination of their degree programme and are awaiting results are also eligible. Admission in to the IAS, IPS and the Central Services (Group A and Group B) is through the combined competitive exams for the civil services while recruitment to the Indian Forest Service is through a separate examination. The examination has three stages - Civil Services Aptitude test (CSAT), a main exam and finally an interview - and is known for being extremely challenging. Entry into the IAS is considered very difficult; most applicants rank the Indian Administrative Service as their top choices because of the high prestige, salary, and benefits that come with such positions. About 850 candidates are finally selected each year out of the nearly 2,00,000 which take the exam but only a rank i.e. top 50-100 guarantees an IAS or IFS selection which means an acceptance rate of 0.01 percent, which makes it one of the most competitive exam in the world.
