Hi Harish,
Distance education is the mode of education where instruction is provided to students located at distant places, through well prepared study material supplemented by audio-visual aids. This mode of education is also known as correspondence study or distance learning.
Distance learning programs allow for increased access to learning and encourage life-long learning. Secondly, distance learning does not require commuting. This saves you money and time that you’d otherwise spend on travel back and forth to college. You can schedule learning around other aspects of your personal and professional life. You can complete most of the classes at your convenience. You can review the assignments and do your homework during off-hours or from home.
One of the biggest distance learning benefits is the issue of flexibility and time. Because students are not confined to a classroom for a certain number of hours on a given day, they can approach their coursework with flexibility and complete lessons when it suits their schedule. Some distance education courses are more structured with teacher-student contact. Here, the student is assigned to a Learning Center. The Center bridges the gap between the faculty at the University and the student. A learning center conducts counseling and tutoring in a classroom environment to provide fundamental knowledge on a topic. This counseling and tutoring helps a student to further carry on with self-study. Many of the study centers have other facilities like practical training, laboratory facilities, etc. The students are also supposed to submit assignments to the Learning Center. These assignments are evaluated and the academic counselor’s at the Learning Centers can provide the students with counseling and tutoring based on any deficiencies noticed. These facilities help a student progress better in his studies, rather than having to do all the study work by himself.
However, while the qualification earned through distance learning programmes are considered equivalent to the regular programme, the value in the job market is not the same. So while you are eligible to sit for any entrance test, or apply for a government or private sector job, most employers prefer candidates who have qualified through regular college. So if you wish to get the maximum benefit from the distance learning programmes it may be a good idea to get a job and work alongside. The work experience counts for a lot with prospective employers, and will give you the skills required to improve your job prospects.
Good Luck!!!
